The Bridle Club is a weekly group activity intended to give children the opportunity to learn more about working with horses, their care and management. It complements riding lessons by building confidence and knowledge in the management of horses through a combination of theory and practical instruction over each three hour session.
The practical ‘hands on’ component pairs each child with a horse. They then learn stable, saddle and bridle maintenance, how to communicate with and handle ‘their’ horse, its grooming, health and welfare. The idea being that each child gets the chance to look after ‘their’ horse for the morning.
The theory component will introduce a different theme each week. Participants will discuss and explore horse physiology and psychology; breeds of horses; common disorders, ailments and dental abnormalities; first aid and preventative medicine; recognising and managing lameness; nutritional requirements and the impacts of various feed compositions; and exercising and training for particular disciplines.
Longer term participants will also have opportunity for first hand association with foals as they grow into adult horses. In 2009 we will have seven broodmares due to foal from October to November. We will also be weaning our six foals from the 2008/09 breeding season, and commence training of our yearling and two 2 year olds. Our breeding program will ensure more each year.
The sessions are conducted in a relaxed but safe environment under constant supervision of Indarra Equestrian staff. Participants will have the chance to meet and share their experiences with others who have the same interest in learning about horses.
